PART 3: The Price of Truth

The jet climbed into the velvet darkness of the midnight sky, leaving the glittering lights of the city behind like fallen stars.

Below me, Richard was likely still basking in the glow of his own ego, unaware that his empire was currently being dismantled by a series of automated emails I had scheduled to hit every major news outlet and federal regulator the moment I reached international airspace.

I sat in the plush leather seat, my hand resting on my belly, and watched the GPS track our path toward a life that would never know his name.

The satellite phone on the console flickered to life.

It was Richard.

I let it ring until the silence became deafening, then finally answered.

“Clara,” his voice was tight, stripped of its public charm, replaced by a frantic, jagged edge.

“What did you do? My accounts are locked.

The board is calling.

Where are you?”

I didn’t answer his questions.

I simply leaned into the microphone, my voice steady, reflecting a power he had spent years trying to suppress.

“I stopped being your accessory, Richard.

I stopped playing the part of the radiant, pregnant wife who looks the other way.

By the time the sun rises, the police will have the ledger, the press will have the photos, and the woman in the red dress will be left standing in the wreckage of a life you promised her.”

He began to scream, a guttural, desperate sound that spoke of a man finally realizing he had miscalculated his own hunter.

I didn’t wait for his threaTS. I pressed the button to kill the connection and watched the signal die.

I took the SIM card out of the phone and snapped it in two, watching the plastic fall to the floor.

The horizon began to glow with the first, faint hint of dawn—a new day, a new name, and a future that belonged entirely to me and the child growing within me.

Richard had wanted a quiet, obedient wife who would stay put and smile; instead, he had created the one person capable of taking everything he loved and turning it into ashes.

I leaned my head back, closed my eyes, and finally, for the first time in six months, I slept without a single secret to keep.
