PART 3: “Pack your bags, Caleb. The only thing you’ll be inheriting today is a lawsuit.”

The garden audio system hummed with a final, lingering crackle as the recording cut off, leaving a suffocating, heavy silence in its wake.

The string quartet had long since packed away their instruments, and the forty guests who had come to witness a fraudulent wedding were now hurriedly whispering, desperate to distance themselves from a man whose professional and personal life had just evaporated in less than five minutes.

Caleb stood frozen near the apple trees, his face drained of every trace of color.

The ambition that had fueled his arrogance for over a decade had vanished, replaced by the panicked realization that he had just signed his own financial and social death warrant in front of real estate developers, bankers, and municipal leaders.

“Evelyn, wait—don’t be irrational,” Caleb stammered, stepping past Mrs. Bell, his hands trembling as he reached out toward his wife.

“We can talk about this inside.

We can fix the corporate accounts, we can cancel whatever paperwork you think I filed.

Don’t ruin everything we built together over a misunderstanding!”

Evelyn didn’t flinch.

She looked down at him with the cold, absolute clarity of a woman waking up from a long, exhausting dream.

“We didn’t build this, Caleb,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the damp afternoon air like glass.

“You borrowed my name, you stole from my studio’s accounts, and you tried to steal the estate my grandfather left to me.

That isn’t a partnership.

That’s a parasite feeding on a host.”

Lila, still trapped under the pergola in Evelyn’s wedding dress, let out a hysterical, broken sob as she realized the grand life she had planned had just collapsed before the ceremony even started.

“Caleb, do something!” Lila cried, tugging at the lace sleeves of the gown.

“Tell them she’s lying! Tell them this is her house, but—”

“Shut up, Lila,” Caleb snapped, his thin veneer of charm finally shredding completely.

Before Caleb could take another step toward Evelyn, two men in sharp gray suits stepped out from the shadows of the old stone wall.

They weren’t wedding guesTS. They were senior investigators from Hawthorne & Price Corporate Auditing, dispatched the moment Evelyn’s textile conservation server flagged the unauthorized transfer requesTS.

“Mr. Caleb Price,” the lead investigator said smoothly, flashing a laminated badge before pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his pocket.

“You are being placed under formal arrest for corporate fraud, identity theft, and attempted forgery of commercial real estate deeds.”

The gasps rippled through the few guests who hadn’t already fled toward their cars.

Caleb lunged backward, his eyes wide with horror as the investigator closed in.

“You can’t do this! I’m a principal at Price Urban! I have rights—”

“Your rights ended the moment you recorded yourself plotting grand larceny on a public garden audio system,” the investigator interrupted, snapping the cuffs onto Caleb’s wrists with a sharp, definitive click.

As Caleb was dragged away across the damp grass—his expensive midnight tuxedo stained with mud and his reputation entirely destroyed—he cast one desperate, pleading look back toward the gate.

Evelyn didn’t even blink.

She turned her back on him, walking slowly toward the idling taxi waiting by the stone pillars.

Before she got into the car, she paused, looking back at Lila standing alone under the pergola, shivering in a dress that had never belonged to her.

“Keep the dress, Lila,” Evelyn said softly, a cold, satisfied smile touching the corner of her lips.

“You’ll need something expensive to wear to the bankruptcy hearings.”

Evelyn slid into the back of the cab, closing the door firmly against the noise of the garden.

The taxi pulled away down the winding country lane, leaving behind a ruined wedding, a disgraced ex-husband, and an empire that had finally returned to its rightful owner.
