PART 3: “Keep the mistress, Rowan. You’re going to need someone to pay your legal fees.”

The heavy oak doors of the family courtroom swung open, letting in the gray, afternoon light of downtown Chicago.

Outside, a light drizzle had begun to slick the pavement, turning the busy street into a mirror of flashing brake lights and hurried pedestrians.

Rowan stood frozen at the petitioner’s table, his manicured hands resting on the edge of the mahogany wood as if holding onto a sinking ship.

The navy suit that had felt so authoritative two hours ago now seemed suffocating, a costume for a play where he had completely fumbled his lines.

Tessa had already slipped out through the side exit, abandoning him the moment Judge Patel announced the forensic audit and supervised visitation.

She hadn’t looked back once, her pearl earrings swinging as she practically ran down the corridor to distance herself from a man who was suddenly radioactive.

Rowan turned around slowly, his eyes scanning the courtroom until they landed on Claire.

She was standing beside Nia Brooks, her posture straight despite the lingering ache of her cesarean incision.

She wore her exhaustion like armor rather than a vulnerability, her hazel eyes completely clear, steady, and unyielding.

Behind her stood Benjamin, cradling ten-week-old Elodie against his shoulder with a practiced, gentle ease.

The baby was fast asleep, her tiny fist still loosely curled around the fabric of her grandfather’s tie.

“Claire… wait,” Rowan called out, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic edge as he hurried down the center aisle.

“We can talk about this.

We don’t have to destroy our family over a judge’s temporary order.

We can go home, sit down, and figure out coparenting like adults—”

“There is no ‘we’ anymore, Rowan,” Claire interrupted, her voice ringing out with absolute, chilling finality.

She didn’t raise her voice, but every word carried the weight of a definitive sentence.

“You spent months plotting to drain our accounts, gaslighting me about postpartum depression, and parading your mistress through my life while I was nursing your child,” Claire continued, looking straight into his panicked eyes.

“You wanted a clean break with Tessa? You got it.

But you’ll be doing it from a studio apartment once my father’s corporate auditors finish stripping every last asset you hid in those offshore shell companies.”

Rowan flinched as if he had been physically struck.

“You can’t do that… those are my business accounts! I built—”

“You built nothing,” Benjamin’s deep, steady voice cut across the courtroom, stopping Rowan dead in his tracks.

Benjamin stepped forward, shielding Claire and the baby with his broad frame, looking at his own son with a mixture of profound pity and absolute disgust.

“You didn’t build an empire, Rowan.

You built a house of cards on top of everyone else’s sacrifices,” Benjamin said, his jaw tight.

“I spent the last six weeks watching my daughter-in-law raise a newborn while you played house with an executive assistant who cared more about your bank statement than your child.

I was ashamed to call you my son.

Today, I’m just grateful the court gave you exactly what you deserve.”

Rowan opened his mouth to argue, to threaten, to lash out with some venomous remark, but the words died in his throat.

He looked around the empty courtroom, realizing with horrifying clarity that he had lost everything: his wife, his child, his wealth, and his reputation.

Nia Brooks gave a polite, sardonic nod.

“Have your counsel contact my office regarding the asset seizure schedule, Mr. Hale.

Good afternoon.”

Claire turned away without another glance, walking through the heavy oak doors into the hallway.

Benjamin followed closely behind, adjusting Elodie softly as she let out a tiny, contented sigh in her sleep.

As the elevator doors slid open to take them down to the lobby, Claire felt the last remaining weight of her postpartum grief finally lift away.

The storm outside was washing the city clean, and for the first time in months, the air felt entirely her own.
