I woke up this morning and decided to make scrambled eggs. When I cracked the egg onto my plate, a white ribbon came out. I immediately lost my appetite.

I totally agree – it really does look strange at first glance and can quickly ruin your breakfast.

The good news is: It’s completely harmless and nothing to worry about!

This white, ribbon-like or string-like structure is called a chalaza.

What exactly is it?

Its function: Every fresh egg has two of these chalaza.

They are made up of normal, thick egg white and act like tiny seat belts or shock absorbers.

They hold the yolk squarely in the middle of the egg so that it doesn’t hit the shell and get damaged.

Sign of quality: The fact that you saw the chalaza so clearly is actually a great sign.

The more pronounced and visible the chalaza is, the fresher the egg is.

They slowly dissolve over time.

Is it edible?

Yes, definitely.

It is completely edible and tastes completely different from the rest of the egg white.

It simply clumps together when frying or stirring and becomes completely unnoticeable.

Tip for next time: If it is visually distracting, you can simply remove the chalaza with a fork or spoon before stirring and throw it away.

So you definitely don’t have to throw away your eggs.

Maybe you will have better luck with your scrambled eggs tomorrow!
