PART 3: The Boardroom Battlefield**

The tension in the boardroom was thick enough to choke on.

The polished mahogany table stretched out like a fault line between the allies and the conspirators.

Valentin sat at the far end, his fingers steepled, wearing a mask of grandfatherly concern that Paloma now recognized as the jagged edge of a blade.

When Paulo walked in, his hand firmly pressed to the small of Paloma’s back, the room went deathly silent.

He didn’t take his usual seat at the head.

Instead, he pulled out the chair next to him for Paloma, and then stood behind her like a sentinel.

“Gentlemen,” Paulo began, his voice echoing with a dangerous, calm authority.

“There has been much speculation regarding the ‘surprises’ discovered in my office this week.

Let us dispense with the whispers.”

Valentin cleared his throat, leaning forward.

“Paulo, we are concerned about your… recent distractions.

A pregnancy in the executive suite is a liability.

It invites scrutiny, scandal, and, frankly, questions about your judgment.”

Paloma felt her heart hammering against her ribs, but she remembered the weight of Paulo’s hand on her shoulder earlier that morning, the way he had looked at her when she told him the baby’s name.

*Victoria.* She wasn’t just a secretary anymore; she was the mother of the future, and she refused to let these men dictate her worth.

“Liability?” Paloma’s voice rang out, steady and clear.

Every head turned.

“I have managed the inner workings of this company for three years, Valentin.

I have navigated your ‘distractions’—which usually involve cleaning up your failed mergers—while maintaining the highest standard of excellence.

My pregnancy does not change my competence.

It merely reveals that some of you are more interested in character assassination than corporate growth.”

Valentin’s smile faltered.

“My dear, you are clearly emotional—”

“I am a mother,” she interrupted, rising from her chair, her gaze locking onto his.

“And I am the one who holds the digital keys to the archives where you’ve been siphoning the offshore accounTS. Shall we discuss liabilities, or shall we discuss embezzlement?”

The room exploded into a chorus of frantic murmurs.

Paulo’s gaze snapped to Valentin, who had gone deathly pale.

The “surprise” Valentin had left in the office hadn’t just been the ultrasound—he’d left a trail, and Paloma, ever the efficient assistant, had followed it.

Paulo stepped forward, his shadow looming over his stepfather.

“The board is here to discuss my future, Valentin.

I suggest you start by explaining your own.”

Within the hour, security escorted Valentin from the building.

The air in the boardroom shifted, the oppressive weight lifting.

By the time they returned to the penthouse, the silence was no longer heavy with secrets; it was filled with a tentative, electric possibility.

Paulo locked the door, turning to face her.

“You were incredible today.”

“I was a mother protecting her child,” she replied, finally letting the adrenaline fade into exhaustion.

Paulo crossed the room, stopping inches from her.

He reached out, his hand hovering over her stomach before he finally let it rest there.

“I never called you Vera because I wanted her.

I called you that because I was a man lost in the dark, afraid that if I admitted you were the only thing I saw, I would lose the control I’d spent my life building.”

He looked up at her, his gray eyes soft, stripped of the corporate armor.

“I don’t want the penthouse to be a sanctuary.

I want it to be a home.

With you.

With Victoria.”

Paloma leaned into him, the baby giving a gentle flutter against his palm.

The secret was out, the threat was neutralized, and for the first time, she wasn’t just surviving.

She was home.

Paulo pulled her into his arms, and as the city lights began to twinkle outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, she knew that the life they were about to build would be the greatest project they had ever managed—together.
