PART 3: The Aftermath of the Storm

The hour was up.

The digital silence in the room was heavier than any spoken word.

Thanh looked at his hands, realizing that for the first time in years, he didn’t care about the phone, the messages, or the man who had torn them apart.

The anger had evaporated, leaving behind a vast, hollow exhaustion.

“What now?” Myra asked, staring at the ceiling.

“Now,” Thanh said, standing up, “we have the rest of our lives to wonder which one of us he liked better.”

He walked toward the door, leaving the two phones on the table.

They were just pieces of glass and metal again, stripped of their power to hurt because the truth had already done the damage.

He didn’t ask for a divorce, he didn’t demand an explanation, and he didn’t beg for forgiveness.

There was nothing to demand because there was nothing left to salvage.

Myra didn’t move.

She sat in the chair, looking at the phones as if they were alien artifacTS. She had the answer she had wanted, and it was a poison that would stay in her system for the rest of her days.

As Thanh stepped out into the night, the cool air hit his face, washing away the smell of the living room—a scent of stale perfume and broken promises.

He reached his car and turned back once to look at the window of their apartment.

He knew she was sitting there, in the dark, with the silence of the phones echoing the silence of their lives.

They had tried to find the truth to save themselves, only to discover that the truth was the final nail in the coffin of their union.

He drove away, not to a new life, but away from a dead one.

The tragedy wasn’t that they had been cheated on; it was that they had been cheated on by the same person, at the same time, because they had both stopped caring enough to notice.

The phones would stay on that table until the batteries died, just like everything else in that house, finally, and mercifully, disconnected.
